Cables, pipelines, and conduits can be laid with minimum or no excavations using so called NO-DIG or trenchless technologies. With microtunnelling, small diameter tunnels are excavated with special boring machines that use bentonite and, sometimes, polymer-based drilling slurries. These slurries are designed to provide a proper front of the working face, as well as adequate lubrication. The same slurry features are required in Pipe Jacking. In HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling), directional drilling stems are employed using location and guidance systems. In HDD, drilling fluids must ensure borehole stabilisation, remove cuttings, and avoid sedimentation. Therefore, while characterised by good thixotropy, they should not require too much pump pressure. Our product range for NO-DIG constructions features several bentonites, polymers, and additives.
